Ngāti Raukawa welcomes $3 million investment to restore Piriharakeke

November 4th 2026

Ngāti Raukawa welcomes the Government’s announcement to provide up to $3 million in grant funding through the Regional Infrastructure Fund (RIF) towards the restoration of Piriharakeke, the Manawatū River Loop at Foxton.

The investment marks a significant milestone in a decades-long journey to restore the health and mauri of the awa, reflecting the enduring commitment of local hapū, Save Our River Trust (SORT), community and partners.

Te Tūmatakahuki Chair Reihana Adlam said “Piriharakeke is a taonga of deep cultural, historical and environmental significance to Ngāti Raukawa. Once a thriving mahinga kai and an important connection between communities, the river loop has suffered considerable environmental decline following the diversion of the Manawatū River and the cumulative impacts of upstream pollution.”

“For generations, Ngāti Raukawa hapū have advocated for the restoration of the awa, recognising that the health of the river is intrinsically connected to the wellbeing of its people.”

Save Our River Trust Chair, Irene Wakefield says the investment is a significant achievement for the community and an important step towards realising a vision carried by generations.

“This kaupapa has always been about more than restoring a waterway. It is about restoring the mauri of our awa, reconnecting our people to Piriharakeke and ensuring future generations inherit a healthier environment.

“We stand on the shoulders of those who have advocated and worked tirelessly for our awa. SORT reflects the efforts of a long line of volunteers. Their vision, persistence and belief in what Piriharakeke could become have brought us to this point, and it is important that their contributions are recognised.”

Te Tūmatakahuki General Manager and SORT Deputy Chair, Justin Tamihana said, “The restoration of Piriharakeke has required years of advocacy, planning and partnership. This funding is a reflection of those collective efforts and provides renewed momentum for the work ahead.”

“Ngāti Raukawa has been strongly represented in this mahi from founding SORT trustees Uncle Moetatua Turoa, Toha Eparaima, Te Kenehi Teira, and Denby Reihana. We also acknowledge the tireless advocacy of longstanding former SORT Chair, Robin Hapi and the efforts of leaders such as Uncle Iwi Nicholson and Uncle Whamaro Mark Kiriona.”

Ngāti Raukawa thanks the many who have given hours of effort to the kaupapa over the years, currently supported by Pou Sefesi and the community volunteers through Save Our River Trust.

The Regional Infrastructure Fund is administered by Kānoa – Regional Economic Development & Investment Unit, within the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment.
